Indian Railways to Boost Coastal Connectivity with New Vande Bharat Express

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announces high-speed corridor linking Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and Madgaon.

BENGALURU – In a significant move to enhance regional connectivity and boost the economy of coastal Karnataka, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has officially announced plans for a new Vande Bharat Express service. The high-speed corridor will link the state capital, Bengaluru, with the port city of Mangaluru and extend further to Madgaon in Goa.

The announcement was made following a high-level operational review at Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bengaluru on April 25, 2026. The Minister confirmed that the project has cleared major technical hurdles and is entering its final stages.

Technical Milestones & Electrification

A primary catalyst for this new service is the successful completion of electrification works on the challenging Hassan-Mangaluru route. This section, known for its steep gradients and scenic Western Ghats terrain, has historically been a bottleneck for high-speed electric locomotives.

"The electrification between Hassan and Mangaluru is now complete," Minister Vaishnaw stated during the briefing. "Testing and trials are currently underway. We expect to launch the Vande Bharat service within the next few months, enhancing connectivity across the entire coastal region."

Impact on Travel and Tourism

The proposed service is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the IT hub of Bengaluru and the coastal belt. Preliminary estimates suggest a total travel duration of approximately 13 hours for the full circuit to Madgaon, offering a premium, reliable alternative to road travel.

Key benefits of the new service include:

  • Integrated Connectivity: Linking the three major economic and tourism hubs of Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and Goa.
  • Economic Stimulus: Faster transit for business professionals and a major boost for the tourism sectors in Dakshina Kannada.
  • Advanced Safety: Implementation of Automated Emergency Braking (AEB) systems for the steep ghat sections.

National Context & Infrastructure Push

This expansion is part of a broader push by the Indian Railways to modernize its fleet. During his visit to BEML, the Minister also inaugurated the 'Aditya' complex, a specialized facility dedicated to the manufacturing of indigenous bullet trainsets (B-28) capable of speeds up to 280 kmph.

With trials progressing smoothly on the Hassan-Mangaluru stretch, residents and regular travelers can expect an official launch date and ticketing schedule to be released by the Ministry of Railways in the coming weeks.
